Tradition has it that there were three schools in the Village before the Union Village Academy was established in 1839. In 1849, what is the now the Community Center was built on Academy Street for classrooms, and then following the Civil War, the Union Free School District was established and took over the Academy building.

A new school building was erected on Gray Avenue in 1909 and this has been the site of the educational institutions ever since. The original school was destroyed by fire in 1925. The present middle grade building now occupies that site. in 1945 the Greenwich Central School District came into being, when rural school districts in the surrounding countryside joined with the Union district, where high school education had long been provided for the county students. The district now has three school buildings on 108 acres of land. There are some 1,300 students and 99 administrators and teachers.

The school continues to increase it services to help students be successful in achieving the New York State Standards, including a summer school program. GCS offers a broad range of courses for students of all abilities. Advanced Placement offerings in Math, European History, U.S. History and English, as well as offerings in Agriculture, Art, Foreign Language, Music, Computer/Business and Authentic Research provide our students with many possibilities and challenges, GCS offers a well-balanced program of 40 interscholastic sports in three seasons and 22 extracurricular activities.

The school has long been a focal point for the community, providing space for additional community programs and presentations.
